News icon Drew chats to G.I Joe's Rachel Nichols
Is she just another hot babe clad in black leather in a tentpole toy movie or something more? After some 'I know her, she's that girl' roles in everything from teen chick flicks (Sisterhood of the Travelling Pants 2) to sci-fi (Alias, Star Trek), I ask just who Rachel Nichols just who she thinks she is…

Drew: How hands on were you in the production?

Rachel: Very much so. Stephen [Sommers, director] loves to put the actors in the stunts and scenes as much as possible and I did everything they'd allow me to. It was really hard work but all of us got along so well that it didn't feel as hard as it was and we had a really good time.

Drew: There were obviously a lot of digital effects in the film, so how many stunts could there possibly have been for you to take part in?

Rachel: You're right there was a fair amount that had to be CGI but people don't realize how much was actually real. The sequence where there are cars and hummers flying through the air? We actually did that. I think we set some sort of record for launching the most cars into the air for any movie. There were a lot of real explosions and there was a lot of real water, believe or not.

There's the scene where the underwater bunker is about to explode and I'm running out in a slo-mo shot and they actually dumped 500 gallons of water into that bunker during the take. I had to time it perfectly, knowing when I saw the water coming down that I had to start running. So a lot of it is actually real.

Drew: It's very much a boy's movie, full of explosions, toys and hot girls in leather. How much of a crossover do you think there'll be in female audience members?...

Paramount Pictures has provided Film School Rejects with an exclusive look at the next character poster from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, featuring Rachel Nichols as Shana ‘Scarlett’ O’Hara. Nichols, who was most recently seen in Star Trek, obviously adds a bit of the sex appeal to Stephen Sommers’ film, alongside the The Baroness, the sexy bad girl played by Sienna Miller.

News icon Maine's Nichols All Green In 'Star Trek'
The Maine actress featured in steamy scenes with Captain Kirk in "Star Trek" says she doesn't have to worry about being pestered by overzealous trekkies. After all, she says no one would recognize her without the red hair and green body as cadet Gaila.

Augusta native Rachel Nichols tells Portland Magazine that it took five hours to be painted green and to have her hair done for scenes in the movie. Later this summer, she'll play an even bigger role in "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra."

Nichols says it's a far cry from the life of power suits and briefcases she envisioned when she left Maine to attend Columbia University. She says she still gets back to Augusta, and plans a visit before a press tour to promote the new "G.I. Joe" movie.

News icon Actress Rachel Nichols & Producer Scott Stuber Split
ALIAS actress RACHEL NICHOLS has split from producer husband SCOTT STUBER - after just seven months of marriage.

Nichols wed Universal Studio producer Stuber in a private ceremony in Aspen, Colorado last June (08). The couple settled in Mexico following the nuptials, but announced the split on Thursday (26Feb09).

A representative for the pair tells People.com, "Scott Stuber and Rachel Nichols have separated due to irreconcilable differences."

Nichols, 29, will appear in two upcoming action films, the J.J. Abrams-directed Star Trek and GI Joe. Stuber, 38, has projects that include the 2008 film Role Models and the upcoming movie The Wolf Man, which stars Benicio Del Toro.

News icon Pine: Star Trek XI Not Steamy
Just how steamy will the new Star Trek movie be?

The film's star Chris Pine told us not too long ago that the upcoming installment of the outer-space franchise has been "sexed up for a new generation." However, he wants everyone to know that the Starship Enterprise hasn't been turned into an intergalactic flying orgy.

Back in November, Pine, who stars as Capt. Kirk in the new Trek flick, said he not only shares some steamy lip-locking with Rachel Nichols, but he also predicted a scene in which Zoe Saldana takes off her shirt will "become famous."

Fast-forward to Sunday night at HBO's Golden Globes party...

"It is a different Star Trek, but there's no crazy sex scene," Pine told me at the Beverly Hills Hilton poolside soiree. "There may be some bare midriffs, but you know it's been a long time since the bikini was invented, so I don't think we're going to ruffle any feathers."

Beaming into theaters on May 8, the J.J. Adams-directed movie follows the early years of Kirk and Co. and also stars Zachary Quinto as Spock and Winona Ryder as Spock's human mother, Amanda Grayson.

News icon Newlywed Rachel Nichols' career on the fast track
Days after returning from a honeymoon in an island of French Polynesia actress Rachel Nichols spent part of her day driving around Los Angeles approving furniture for a home she and husband, Scott Stuber, are building in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur, Mexico.

Staying still is not in the stars for Nichols, 28, a native of Augusta.

Follow the ZIP codes, from 04330 (Augusta) to 90210 (Beverly Hills) "with a stop in between at 10001 (New York City)," Nichols said.

You can now catch Nichols, a 1998 graduate of Cony High School and a 2003 graduate of Columbia University, moving on the silver screen in "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2," playing at local theaters.

She appears as Julia in the film's story of Carmen (America Ferrara), and wears a heavy Elizabethan costume in her first scene.

"We both go to Yale," Nichols said. "I'm sort of a fancy Yale actress. I'm performing on stage and she's waiting to hold my dress."

Nichols' films set for release in 2009 include J.J. Abrams's "Star Trek," in which she plays a cadet at Starfleet Academy, and as Shana "Scarlett" O'Hara in Stephen Sommers' "G.I. Joe.: Rise of Cobra."...

News icon Behind the Scenes with Rachel Nichols: GI Joe’s hottest Action Hero
To be an action hero you have to be tough enough to kick the bad guys butt. To be a female action hero you not only need to be tough enough to kick the bad guys butt, but you have to do it with big hair, body hugging clothes and high heels. I recently posted a couple action hero workouts that I have been doing with my client, Rachel Nichols, who has been cast as Scarlett in the new GI Joe Movie that hits theatres in August of 2009. Since the workouts have been so popular, I thought it would be fun for you to get a glimpse as to what it’s like to play an action star. Rachel has been kind enough to give us a peek behind the curtain.

I first asked Rachel if there was anything she could tell us about the movie or her character Scarlett. Unfortunately she wasn’t able to share any specifics. (We will just have to wait until the movie comes out!) I can tell you that GI Joe isn’t just 1 person. It is actually an elite counter-terrorist team, whose main purpose is to defend human freedom from Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world. So here’s what the lovely Rachel had to say:

What is it like playing an Action Hero babe?

Playing an action hero comes with a lot of outside influence and expectancy. When fans are familiar with a character, they expect certain elements to crossover between the fantasy and the human playing the role and I certainly don't want to let anyone down. Playing Scarlett has been so much fun. I've never had two months to physically prepare for a role and I took advantage of it. It's not every day I get to have fight scenes on elevators, break necks, jump through fire, and almost get washed away by waves of water in an underwater bunker!...

News icon First Look: Rachel Nichols as Scarlett in GI Joe
Paramount released the first photo on JoBlo of Rachel Nichols (Charlie Wilson’s War, Alias) in costume as Scarlett O’Hara in Stephen Sommers‘ live-action adaptation of GI Joe. Ranked Master Sergeant, red-headed Scarlett is the first female character in the GI Joe action figure line. Her weapon of choice is the crossbow (pictured in the promo photo), and her specialty is counter intelligence.

I really love the idea of a GI Joe live action movie because it could really be something way above and beyond any army or war-type film we’ve ever seen before. I’ve heard that the script is kind of a stinker, and having the guy who directed Van Hellsing direct also doesn’t inspire confidence. That said, both of the photos released so far from the studio, Snake Eyes, and now Scarlet are more bad ass than I could have ever imagined. They could have gone real corny with colored outfits trying to replicate the look of the original characters from the GI Joe universe. So far I’m really digging the far more realistic black combat gear.

News icon “G.I. Joe” Film Reveals Characters; Aims for Cross-Generational Appeal
Paramount provides the first character-reveal for their “G.I. Joe” film, as well as insight into what directors and producers describe as an “origins story.”

In a photo released by Paramount Pictures, a black-clad ninja, whose face is obscured by a helmet resembling the sort of mesh mask worn by fencing students, grips a sword erect in his hands. He is Snake Eyes, the first character from Paramount’s upcoming film, G.I. Joe, to be revealed, according to USA Today.

Due to be released in August 2009, G.I. Joe is being groomed as the resurrection of a franchise, just as Transformers was last year. The sci-fi story about a team of elite military operatives battling an unsavory and villainous organization called Cobra, “G.I. Joe” (the team, not a single person) first appeared in the 1960s as a line of 12-inch figurines from Hasbro. In the 1980s, it evolved into smaller figurines and a successful TV series.

According to its director, Stephen Sommers, the movie will be an origins story, so one of the issues will be how to explain details in a way that will both induct new viewers while developing more background to interest existing fans.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who also worked on Transformers, says that this connection between past and present is a basic part of the broad appeal, and maintaining that diversity, particularly of race and gender, is important. “There are quite a few characters in it, and almost certainly a character in which an audience member can see themselves, or want to be,” Bonaventura said.

The character of Snake Eyes is being played by man-behind-the-mask Ray Park, of Mortal Kombat, Sleepy Hollow and Star Wars (he was Darth Maul) fame. Other actors on the “good” side include Channing Tatum (as Duke), Rachel Nichols (as “Scarlett” O’Hara), Marlon Wayans (Ripcord), Dennis Quaid (as The Commander).

On the Cobra side of the battle are Sienna Miller (as the Baroness), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (as the Cobra Commander and in various other roles), Christopher Eccleston (as Destro), and Byung-hun Lee (as Storm Shadow).
